Space Dome Technologies

Space Dome Technologies is an Auckland-based company that builds spaceship simulators. The company’s first commercial model – Voyager II – is an interactive four-dimensional, 64-seater spacecraft simulator, soon to be located at Skyline Gondola and Luge in Rotorua. Spanning 16m in diameter, the ship’s unique motion platform is weight-balanced with high performance bearings that travel more than 2m in four directions at a maximum speed of 1.5m per second.

When the company first began looking for suppliers, director Dennis Hyde says their focus was on sourcing quality New Zealand-made components. “We are very keen on using local suppliers, where possible – particularly for the technical parts,” says Dennis. “This is very much down to three things – the superior quality, delivery and back-up support of Kiwi companies.

“Victor encompasses each of these, as well as being able to provide useful technical expertise and customisation. Obviously there is a mainline market Victor supplies to, but we were fortunate that they are open to looking at new projects and designs, and expanding their clientele.
“We have access to the best quality hydraulic cylinders in the world – pretty soon it will be our overseas counterparts that will be sourcing these components from New Zealand.”
